About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Sydney River, Nova Scotia, the Ugly Mug Cafe & Emporium is a hidden gem that truly embodies the spirit of community and local flavors. Located at 1290 Kings Rd, this charming cafe has garnered a loyal following thanks to its exceptional service and a menu that boasts both quality and innovation.

When you step inside, you're greeted by a warm, relaxed atmosphere. It's a space that invites you to linger a little longer, perhaps with a delectable Café Mocha or a freshly baked Cinnamon Roll. The reviews speak volumes: customers rave about their experiences, describing the cafe as a vibrant local hub where friendly faces and quality food seamlessly come together.

Among the standout offerings are the custom veggie wraps, crafted fresh by the attentive staff who go above and beyond to ensure every visitor leaves satisfied. One delighted customer even remarked on the “amazing customer service” that feels genuine and personal. This cafe is not just a stop; it’s an experience, especially before heading to the nearby McCurdy Airport, which some have called a "food desert."

But the culinary marvels do not stop at savory. The selection of baked goods is nothing short of extraordinary. Regulars swear by their Morning Glory Muffin and those famous Cinnamon Rolls, both of which invite you to indulge guilt-free. The pricing is reasonable, making it accessible for everyone who appreciates artisanal baking and the simple pleasures of a good meal.

The Ugly Mug also proudly supports local artisans by stocking locally sourced products, reinforcing the idea that great things come from collaboration within the community. As one customer highlighted, it’s delightful to see a place that values local businesses rather than succumbing to the pressures of big-chain establishments.

In a world where cafes can sometimes feel generic, Ugly Mug Cafe & Emporium stands out. With quality ingredients, friendly service, and an inviting atmosphere, it captures more than just the essence of a café; it captures the heart of the community. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this cafe promises a stop that will leave you feeling happy and well-fed. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself yearning for another visit.

Seventeen million stars for amazing customer service and custom veggie wraps. Four travelers looking for something of substance and delicious and vegetarian before a flight from the nearby food desert airport McCurdy. We walked in and out because didn't see much. Mr. (why didn't I get your name?) Counter Guy standing outside said I'm on break but if you have a few minutes I can fix you up some wraps! Yum plus the bakery (morning glory muffin, ginger molasses thing, cinnamon roll...) Plus good people. Didn't try coffee; want to go back

This place was recommended to me by a Cape Breton’er living in Ontario. This place did not disappoint. The cafe was quite busy just after lunch hour. I ordered a Cafe Mocha and just had to taste their well known cinnamon roll. Both were phenomenal! Highly recommend. The location is in some strip plaza - you likely wouldn’t expect a gem like this to be in there. Inside you have a very relaxed atmosphere. As a tourist it was nice to see some locally sourced items for purchase at the front. Local businesses supporting other local businesses - loved it!

Great place full of locals. Friendly staff, quality baked goods and good prices. Highly recommend this place if you appreciate local business rather than big chains like Robin’s

The baked goods here are of premium quality. Its our go to stop for cookies and coffee. It’s a cute little cafe with the sweetest staff.

I love this place. Nice coffee, very good food (cinnamon rolls are fantastic), and friendly service.

Updated: My husband and I visited just before lunch time (March 8th '21), the chai tea latte was perfect and we were given a choice of cinnamon sprinkled on top or nutmeg both of which were lovely. We also had a freshly baked cinnamon roll each and of the dozens I've tried, those were the freshest, just a pleasant amount of sweetness, and the portion size was just slightly more than I could manage (generous!) although I was tempted to finish it because it was so good! The staff was friendly and helpful and brought our drinks over to where we were seated when they were ready. The place was very clean (including the restrooms) and there were lovely items to look at with regards to the Emporium such as jewellery (jewelry), clothing, handbags (purses) and other items which were available for purchase. We will definitely visit again... We have visited about five more times since early March '21 and the staff have been equally friendly, helpful, and efficient. We each tried the Maple Pecan latte which was delicious and you just can't beat those cinnamon rolls! Top marks

We are visiting from out of province and came here to get coffee and food and it was amazing! The service was also 11/10 and the people were all so friendly and nice! :) will absolutely be going back!!

I absolutely love this cafe. Best hot beverages and honestly the cinnamon rolls and scones are to die for! Amazing customer service the staff really makes you feel at home. Its my little piece of heaven in the AM.
